The Coldest, Driest and Windiest Place on Earth

Imagine a continent larger than Europe, almost completely covered by ice, where temperatures can fall to around 89°C.
There are no ordinary cities here.
No permanent towns.
No national government controlling the entire continent.
And unlike almost every other inhabited region on Earth, Antarctica has no indigenous population that has lived there continuously for thousands of years.
At first glance, it seems like one of the most isolated places on the planet.
But Antarctica is much more than an enormous frozen wilderness.
It is the coldest continent on Earth, and it is also one of the windiest and driest.
Some Antarctic winds can reach extraordinary speeds, especially during powerful katabatic storms that race downhill from the high interior toward the coast.
And then there is something that surprises many people.
Antarctica is technically a desert.
That sounds strange.
How can a continent covered by so much ice possibly be a desert?
The answer is precipitation.
A desert is defined not by heat, but by how little precipitation it receives. Much of the interior of Antarctica receives extremely little snowfall each year. In some areas, the conditions are so dry that the region is classified as a polar desert.
The irony is remarkable.
Antarctica contains roughly 70% of the world’s fresh water, locked away in its massive ice sheet, while at the same time being one of the driest places on Earth.
And this extreme environment created something unique in human history.
For centuries, Antarctica remained almost completely beyond human reach.
But that did not stop people from imagining it.
Long before explorers saw its frozen coastline, Antarctica already existed in the minds of philosophers and mapmakers.
Why Is Antarctica Called Antarctica?
To understand the name Antarctica, we have to travel back more than two thousand years.
Around the fourth century BC, ancient Greek thinkers were already trying to understand the shape of the Earth.
The Greeks had observed the northern skies and were familiar with constellations associated with the northern direction.
One important constellation was Ursa Major, commonly known as the Great Bear.
The Greek word arktos meant “bear.”
From this came the idea of the Arctic the northern region associated with the bear.
But ancient Greek thinkers believed there should be a geographical balance.
If there was a northern region, there should also be a corresponding southern region.
So they imagined a vast southern landmass that would balance the lands of the north.
They called this hypothetical region Antarktikos essentially meaning opposite the Arctic.
The name eventually evolved into the word we use today:
Antarctica.
There was just one problem.
Nobody had actually seen the continent.
For centuries, Antarctica was more of a geographical theory than a known place.
The Unknown Southern Land
Long before anyone reached Antarctica, European mapmakers began drawing a mysterious southern continent on their maps.
They believed that the world needed a huge landmass in the far south to balance the continents of the Northern Hemisphere.
This imagined continent became known as Terra Australis Incognita the Unknown Southern Land.
Maps from the sixteenth century sometimes showed this enormous southern territory stretching across vast areas of the Southern Hemisphere.
But these maps were based largely on imagination, incomplete geographical knowledge, and the belief that the Earth required a continental balance.
Nobody knew whether this southern land actually existed.
And if it did exist, nobody knew what it looked like.
Was it a collection of islands?
A massive continent?
A frozen wasteland?
Or perhaps something completely different?
For centuries, the mystery remained.
Then explorers began sailing farther and farther south.
James Cook Reaches the Antarctic Circle

In the eighteenth century, one of the greatest navigators of his era decided to investigate the mystery.
His name was James Cook.
In 1773, Cook became the first recorded explorer to cross the Antarctic Circle.
He did not actually reach the Antarctic mainland.
Instead, his ships pushed through some of the most dangerous waters on Earth before eventually turning back.
But Cook saw something that changed the debate.
Icebergs.
And these icebergs contained something extremely important:
rocks.
If enormous icebergs were carrying rocks, then those rocks had to have come from land.
That suggested that the mysterious southern continent might actually exist.
Cook became convinced that a large landmass probably lay somewhere farther south.
But he also understood just how dangerous reaching it would be.
The freezing waters, powerful winds, heavy sea ice, and enormous icebergs created a natural barrier unlike anything most sailors had ever encountered.
Cook famously expressed the belief that the lands farther south might never be explored.
He was wrong.
Within a few decades, explorers would begin pushing even deeper into the frozen south.
And eventually, humans would finally reach the continent that had existed on maps for centuries without ever being properly seen.
The First Footsteps on Antarctica
The question of who first set foot on Antarctica remains surprisingly controversial.
Several explorers have been associated with early Antarctic landings, and historical evidence is not always clear enough to settle every claim.
One early claim came from British-American sealer John Davis, who reportedly reached an Antarctic coast in 1821.
But historians have debated whether this landing actually occurred on the Antarctic mainland or elsewhere in the region.
The first widely accepted landing came much later.
In 1895, a Norwegian expedition aboard the ship Antarctic reached the Antarctic coast.
A small group went ashore.
Among them was Norwegian explorer Carsten Borchgrevink.
Borchgrevink later claimed that he was the first person to step onto the Antarctic mainland.
But another member of the expedition, Alexander von Tunzelmann, also claimed that he had stepped ashore first.
And so Antarctica gained one of its strangest historical disputes:
Who was actually first?
There was no dramatic flag-planting ceremony witnessed by the world.
Instead, two men associated with the same landing later disagreed over who had taken those historic first steps.
What sounds like a small argument became part of the mythology surrounding Antarctic exploration.
But the real race was only beginning.
The twentieth century would bring explorers who would push farther into Antarctica’s interior than anyone had imagined possible.
And this period would eventually become known as the Heroic Age of Antarctic Exploration.
The Land That Existed Only on Maps
For centuries, Antarctica was less a place than a mystery drawn on maps.
Long before any explorer reached its frozen shores, people believed that a vast southern land must exist somewhere beyond the known world.
Around 350 BC, the Greek philosopher Aristotle argued that Earth was spherical. The Greeks already knew about the northern region they called Arctic, a name connected to Arktos, meaning bear, because of the constellations associated with the Great Bear.
So if there was a northern region, Aristotle reasoned, there should also be a corresponding southern region.
They imagined a land opposite the Arctic.
They called it Antarctic, derived from the Greek idea of being opposite the Arctic.
And that simple idea would eventually give the frozen continent its name.
But there was a problem.
Nobody actually knew what was down there.
For hundreds of years, Antarctica existed mainly in the imagination of cartographers.
In 1530, a French map depicted a huge southern landmass labeled Terra Australis Incognita meaning Unknown Southern Land.
The shape on the map looked nothing like the Antarctica we recognize today.
It was largely a product of imagination, created from the belief that the world needed a massive southern continent to balance the lands of the Northern Hemisphere.

For generations, explorers sailed farther and farther south searching for evidence.
Then came one of the most important expeditions in Antarctic history.
In 1773, British naval officer James Cook became the first recorded explorer to cross the Antarctic Circle.
He never reached the continent itself.
But he encountered enormous icebergs containing rocks and other debris.
To Cook, this was powerful evidence that a great southern landmass really did exist.
Yet the journey had been so dangerous that he believed reaching the land itself might be nearly impossible.
The seas were unpredictable.
The cold was extreme.
And enormous fields of ice could trap or destroy wooden sailing ships.
Cook’s conclusion was essentially that if a southern continent existed, it might remain beyond the reach of explorers forever.
But history had other plans.
The First Footsteps on Antarctica
Nearly a century later, explorers finally began pushing into the region that had existed on maps for hundreds of years.
Even the question of who first set foot on Antarctica remains controversial.
British-American sailor John Davis was later credited by some with making an early landing in 1821, although the evidence is disputed.
The first generally accepted landing is associated with a Norwegian expedition in 1895.
The expedition’s ship was appropriately named Antarctic.
A small boat was sent toward the shore, carrying members of the expedition.
And when those explorers finally stepped onto the frozen land, they were standing on a continent that humanity had imagined for more than a thousand years.
Even then, however, there was disagreement over who had actually been first.
Two men associated with the landing later disputed who stepped ashore first.
One believed he had made the first landing.
Another claimed that he had stepped out first in order to stabilize the boat.
It sounds almost humorous now.
But at the time, being the first human to stand on Antarctica was a historic achievement.
And this was only the beginning.
The next few decades would become known as the Heroic Age of Antarctic Exploration.
Explorers from several countries began entering the frozen wilderness, facing blizzards, starvation, freezing temperatures, enormous distances and almost complete isolation.
They weren’t simply looking for glory.
They were trying to answer some of the biggest scientific questions of their time.
How large was Antarctica?
What existed beneath its ice?
Could anything survive there?
And perhaps most importantly
Could humans actually conquer this frozen continent?
The answer would soon become much more complicated.
Because after the explorers came something else.
Governments.
And governments weren’t interested only in discovering Antarctica.
They wanted to know whether they could claim it.
When Exploration Became a Race for Territory
The beginning of the twentieth century changed Antarctica forever.
For centuries, explorers had been trying to answer one basic question:
What is actually down there?
But once the continent was explored more systematically, another question began to emerge:
Who owns it?
The answer was far from simple.
Antarctica had no permanent population, no established government, and no recognized sovereign state controlling the continent.
That made it completely different from almost every other region of the world.
And precisely because nobody clearly owned it, several countries began seeing an opportunity.
The Heroic Age of Antarctic Exploration
The first decades of the twentieth century became known as the Heroic Age of Antarctic Exploration.
Expeditions from Britain, Norway, France, Australia and other countries entered the frozen continent.
They mapped coastlines.
Collected geological samples.
Studied weather and wildlife.
And gradually revealed that Antarctica was far more complex than the mysterious white land shown on old maps.
Scientists discovered evidence of vegetation and ancient life.
Even more importantly, explorers began proving that humans could survive, at least temporarily, in one of Earth’s harshest environments.
But these expeditions had another consequence.
Every successful expedition strengthened the connection between a country and Antarctica.
A flag raised on a distant coastline could become a political statement.
A scientific station could become evidence of a country’s presence.
And eventually, scientific exploration began to overlap with national ambition.
Seven Countries Begin Claiming Antarctica

Between 1908 and 1942, seven countries formally claimed portions of Antarctica.
They were:
Argentina, Australia, Chile, France, New Zealand, Norway and the United Kingdom.
Their claims covered enormous sections of the continent.
Some were based on exploration.
Others relied on geographical proximity, historical connections, or previous discoveries.
But there was a major problem.
Some of these claims overlapped.
The most complicated dispute developed between Britain, Argentina and Chile.
Their claimed territories covered overlapping parts of the Antarctic Peninsula.
That meant the same frozen territory could appear on different national maps as belonging to different countries.
And Antarctica was becoming more than a scientific frontier.
It was becoming a geopolitical puzzle.
The Countries That Explored Without Claiming
Not every country immediately demanded territory.
The United States, the Soviet Union, Japan, Sweden, Belgium and Germany all conducted Antarctic exploration or scientific activities without establishing the same kind of territorial claims.
But that did not mean they were uninterested in Antarctica.
In fact, the opposite was increasingly true.
The continent was becoming strategically important.
It occupied an enormous position at the bottom of the world, surrounded by the Southern Ocean and relatively close to South America, Africa and Australia.
And as global powers expanded their reach, Antarctica became impossible to ignore.
Then something happened that made the competition even more complicated.
World War II.
Nazi Germany’s Antarctic Expedition
In 1938–39, Nazi Germany sent an expedition toward Antarctica.
The expedition was partly scientific and partly strategic.
German aircraft photographed large areas of the Antarctic coast and interior.
The expedition also dropped metal markers bearing Nazi symbols in areas that Germany hoped to associate with its claim.
The Germans called the region New Swabia.
The expedition did not create an internationally recognized German territory.
But it demonstrated something important.
Antarctica was no longer simply a destination for explorers.
Countries were beginning to think about the continent in terms of power, strategic access and national interest.
And after World War II ended, the competition would become even more intense.
Research Stations Become Political Statements

After the war, countries increasingly established permanent research stations in Antarctica.
Officially, these stations existed for science.
Scientists could study glaciers, weather, geology, oceans and wildlife.
But a permanent human presence also carried political significance.
A country could effectively say:
“We are here.”
And in international politics, being there matters.
Australia established stations in its claimed Antarctic territory.
France expanded its presence.
Argentina and Britain established bases in areas where their claims overlapped.
Chile also expanded its Antarctic activities.
The proximity of some British, Chilean and Argentine stations was striking.
These countries weren’t necessarily preparing for a conventional war.
But their presence demonstrated how scientific activity and territorial politics could become intertwined.
Antarctica was becoming a frozen chessboard.
And then the Cold War arrived.
The United States and the Soviet Union were already competing for influence across the planet.
Now there was a fear that the rivalry between the two superpowers might reach the most isolated continent on Earth.
If Washington and Moscow began competing for Antarctic territory, the continent could become another front in the Cold War.
Something had to be done.
And eventually, the countries involved realized that cooperation might be safer than competition.
The solution would become one of the most remarkable international agreements of the twentieth century.
The Antarctic Treaty.
The Treaty That Froze the Claims
By the early 1950s, Antarctica had become a strange mixture of science and geopolitics.
Several countries were claiming territory.
Some of those claims overlapped.
And now the Cold War had added another layer of uncertainty.
The United States and the Soviet Union were competing for influence across the world.
So the question was no longer simply:
Who owns Antarctica?
It was becoming:
What happens if the world’s superpowers begin competing there too?
In 1950, the Soviet government sent a memorandum to other countries involved in Antarctica.
Moscow made it clear that it would not recognize territorial decisions made without Soviet participation.
That was a warning.
The Soviet Union did not necessarily need to claim a large piece of Antarctica immediately.
Its message was that it wanted a seat at the table.
And this created a serious concern.
If the Antarctic question was left unresolved, the continent could eventually become another arena for Cold War confrontation.
But instead of allowing that to happen, countries began looking for a completely different solution.
The Idea of a Peaceful Antarctica
In 1957–58, scientists from around the world participated in the International Geophysical Year, a massive international scientific effort.
Antarctica became one of its most important areas of research.
Scientists from countries that were political rivals worked alongside one another.
The results were remarkable.
Instead of fighting over the continent, nations were discovering that they could actually cooperate there.
This scientific cooperation helped create the foundation for something much bigger.
The United States proposed creating an international agreement that would keep Antarctica dedicated to peaceful purposes and scientific research.
Negotiations followed in Washington.
And on December 1, 1959, twelve countries signed the Antarctic Treaty.
It was a historic moment.
For the first time, major countries agreed to put their territorial ambitions aside and create a special international framework for the continent.
Three Principles Changed Antarctica Forever

The original treaty established several fundamental principles.
First, Antarctica would be used only for peaceful purposes.
Military bases and military maneuvers were prohibited.
Second, scientific investigation would remain free.
Researchers from different countries could conduct scientific work across the continent.
Third, scientific information and observations would be freely exchanged among participating countries.
In other words, Antarctica was being turned into something very unusual.
Not a traditional country.
Not a colony.
Not a battlefield.
But a continent where international cooperation was supposed to come before national rivalry.
Yet there was a fascinating detail hidden inside the treaty.
The countries did not simply abandon their territorial claims.
Britain did not say, “This land is no longer ours.”
Australia did not surrender its claim.
Argentina, Chile, France, New Zealand and Norway did not give up theirs either.
Instead, the treaty effectively froze the dispute.
Existing claims were preserved, but countries agreed not to use the treaty system to strengthen or create new sovereignty claims while the treaty remained in force.
That compromise was extremely important.
Because it allowed countries to maintain their historical positions without turning Antarctica into a battlefield.
A Frozen Political Map
Even today, the Antarctic political map reflects those historical claims.
Australia has the largest claimed sector, covering roughly 42 percent of the continent.
Norway, France and New Zealand also maintain claims.
Argentina, Chile and the United Kingdom have overlapping claims in the Antarctic Peninsula region.
But here’s the important part:
These claims are not universally recognized.
The United States, for example, does not recognize the territorial claims of the seven claimant states.
And several claimant countries do not recognize each other’s overlapping claims.
So Antarctica remains a fascinating legal and political situation.
Countries can say:
“This territory is ours.”
But the international treaty system prevents those claims from turning into a conventional territorial struggle.
And that raises another question.
If Antarctica isn’t really divided among these countries in the normal sense, then who actually controls it?
The answer is surprisingly complicated.
There is no Antarctic government.
No Antarctic army.
No Antarctic police force.
And no single country has sovereignty over the entire continent.
Instead, its governance depends largely on the network created by the Antarctic Treaty System.
And this system would eventually become one of the most successful examples of international cooperation in modern history.
But there was still one major question left.
Could this fragile peace survive the future?
Because Antarctica wasn’t just a frozen wilderness.
Underneath its ice could lie enormous natural resources.
And as technology improved and the world became increasingly hungry for energy and minerals, the continent could become far more valuable than it had ever been before.
India Enters the Antarctic Story

The Antarctic Treaty had created something unusual.
Countries that had once competed for territory were now working together for scientific research.
But there was still a major question:
What about countries that had not been involved when the treaty was created?
One of those countries was India.
And India’s relationship with Antarctica is particularly interesting because New Delhi initially viewed the Antarctic Treaty with suspicion.
India Questions the Antarctic Treaty
When the treaty was created in 1959, India was not one of its original signatories.
Indian policymakers were concerned that a small group of powerful countries had effectively created a system for managing an entire continent.
From India’s perspective, there was a possibility that the treaty could eventually allow those countries to dominate Antarctica.
India also worried about something else.
Natural resources.
What if enormous deposits of oil, gas or minerals existed beneath the Antarctic ice?
Would the countries with historical territorial claims eventually try to exploit them?
India believed that Antarctica should ideally be treated as a global resource rather than being controlled through competing national claims.
At one point, India even supported the idea that the United Nations should play a greater role in governing Antarctica.
But India’s position would eventually change.
And that change began with something that seemed almost impossible at first.
India decided to go to Antarctica.
India’s First Antarctic Expedition
In 1981, India launched its first Antarctic expedition.
It was a significant moment.
India had never before established a scientific presence on the continent.
The expedition was led by renowned oceanographer and marine scientist Dr. Syed Zahur Qasim.
India arranged an ice-strengthened research vessel from Norway, and the expedition set out toward the frozen south.
The mission was officially scientific.
Indian researchers studied the Antarctic environment, oceanography, geology and other aspects of the region.
But India’s arrival attracted international attention.
The expedition was so unexpected that one international publication jokingly described India’s move as an “invasion” of Antarctica.
Of course, India wasn’t invading anything.
There were no troops marching across the ice.
No territory was being seized.
India was conducting scientific research.
But the episode demonstrated how politically sensitive Antarctica had become.
Why India Changed Its Position
There was another important reason India became increasingly interested in Antarctica.
During the Cold War, India followed the policy of non-alignment.
It did not formally join either the American or Soviet military blocs.
India therefore had a strong interest in ensuring that Antarctica did not become another arena where powerful countries could dominate weaker nations.
By entering Antarctica itself, India could participate directly in discussions about the continent’s future.
And that meant something important.
India would no longer be watching the Antarctic question from the outside.
It would have a seat at the table.
In 1983, India formally acceded to the Antarctic Treaty.
It subsequently gained Consultative Party status, allowing it to participate in important decision-making within the Antarctic Treaty System.
The change was remarkable.
A country that had once criticized the treaty had now become an active participant in it.
And India wasn’t finished.
India Builds a Scientific Presence
India gradually expanded its Antarctic research program.
Its first permanent research station, Dakshin Gangotri, was established in the 1980s.
Although the station was eventually abandoned after being buried under snow and ice, it marked the beginning of India’s permanent scientific presence in Antarctica.
Later came Maitri, followed decades afterward by Bharati.
These stations allowed Indian scientists to conduct long-term research into Antarctica’s atmosphere, climate, geology, glaciology and surrounding oceans.
But Indian scientists weren’t simply studying Antarctica itself.
They were also studying the continent’s connection to the history of the Indian subcontinent.
One particularly fascinating area of research involved plate tectonics.
Millions of years ago, India was not located where it is today.
The Indian landmass was once part of the ancient supercontinent Gondwana, alongside Antarctica, Africa, Australia and other regions.
Over geological time, these landmasses separated and moved across the planet.
India eventually traveled northward and collided with the Eurasian plate.
That enormous geological collision helped create the Himalayas.
Antarctica therefore isn’t just connected to India’s present-day scientific interests.
It is connected to India’s geological past.
Antarctica Becomes a Global Scientific Laboratory

As more countries joined the Antarctic Treaty System, the continent increasingly became an international laboratory.
Scientists from different nations could conduct research in an environment that would have been almost impossible for any single country to study alone.
They studied:
- climate change
- glaciers
- atmospheric chemistry
- ocean currents
- marine ecosystems
- meteorites
- geology
- ancient climate records
Perhaps the most valuable discoveries came from the ice itself.
Antarctic ice contains tiny bubbles of ancient atmosphere trapped inside it.
By analyzing those bubbles, scientists can reconstruct what Earth’s atmosphere was like thousands or even hundreds of thousands of years ago.
In this sense, Antarctica acts almost like a natural time capsule.
But while scientists were uncovering Earth’s past, another question was becoming increasingly important.
What resources might be hidden beneath the ice?
And that question would transform Antarctica from a scientific curiosity into a potential economic battleground.
The Resources Beneath the Ice

Antarctica contains enormous quantities of fresh water locked inside its ice sheet.
But researchers have also identified geological evidence suggesting that the continent and surrounding regions may contain significant deposits of minerals and fossil fuels.
Estimates of Antarctic oil and gas resources vary widely, and many figures circulated publicly are highly uncertain.
But the possibility alone is enough to attract attention.
Because if technology eventually makes Antarctic resource extraction economically practical, the continent’s political importance could increase dramatically.
There is just one enormous obstacle.
The Antarctic Treaty System.
And one agreement in particular would become critical.
The Madrid Protocol, adopted in 1991, established comprehensive environmental protections for Antarctica and prohibited mineral resource activities other than scientific research.
That meant Antarctica was no longer simply being protected because countries wanted peace.
It was increasingly being protected because the international community recognized that its environment was extraordinarily fragile.
But then came an uncomfortable question:
What happens when technology changes?
What if extracting resources becomes cheaper?
What if climate change makes previously inaccessible areas easier to reach?
And what if countries begin believing that the economic value of Antarctica is simply too great to ignore?
That is where the future of Antarctica becomes much more uncertain.
The Race Beneath the Ice
For decades, Antarctica had been protected by an unusual idea:
Science before profit.
But as technology advanced, the frozen continent began attracting attention for another reason.
What lies beneath the ice?
Antarctica contains enormous amounts of freshwater locked inside its ice sheet. Beneath and around the continent, scientists have also identified geological structures that may contain valuable mineral resources and possible fossil-fuel deposits.
That possibility creates a difficult question.
If Antarctica contains resources worth billions or even trillions of dollars, how long can the world continue treating it as a place where commercial exploitation is largely off-limits?
The Madrid Protocol Changes the Rules
In 1991, countries participating in the Antarctic Treaty System adopted the Protocol on Environmental Protection to the Antarctic Treaty, commonly known as the Madrid Protocol.
It established Antarctica as a natural reserve devoted to peace and science and placed strict environmental protections on the continent.
Most importantly, it prohibits mineral resource activities, except for scientific research.
This was a major development.
The international community wasn’t simply saying:
“Don’t fight over Antarctica.”
It was also saying:
“Don’t destroy it.”
Mining and drilling could potentially damage ecosystems that have evolved under extreme conditions for millions of years.
And unlike many other parts of the world, Antarctica has no large permanent human population that could absorb the environmental consequences of industrial development.
The continent’s isolation is precisely what makes it so vulnerable.
But What About Oil?

This is where the story becomes complicated.
Various geological studies and media reports have suggested that Antarctica and its surrounding regions could contain significant quantities of oil, natural gas and minerals.
But estimates vary dramatically.
Some commonly repeated figures claim enormous quantities of recoverable oil beneath Antarctica, while other scientific assessments emphasize that these numbers are uncertain and that much of the potential resource base may be technically or economically impossible to extract.
So the important point isn’t a single number.
The important point is this:
There may be enormous economic value beneath Antarctica.
And technology changes.
A resource that is impossible to exploit today could become technically possible decades from now.
Climate Change Could Change the Equation
There is another factor that makes the future even more complicated.
Climate change.
